At the end of a long, hard day there is nothing more wonderful than settling into a comfortable bed for a restful and restorative night's sleep. Not only is sleep a necessity, it is also nature's way of regenerating the body and mind for survival. It is impossible for the body to function normally without sleep. Studies show that after 24 hours without sleep brain activity decreases. During sleep the brain works to get the body ready for the coming day. Sleep is also essential in learning and memory.
The body is a finely built machine where each system must work together properly if it is to function at its maximum. Lack of sleep affects the immune system, the body's ability to ward of disease and sickness. Sleeping regulates moods. Lack of sleep can make one irritable, moody and cranky. Being tired effects concentration, decision making as well as one's ability to perform on the job or in sport's activity. Getting a good night's sleep has a direct correlation to how well one performs on a test.
Babies and children especially benefit from sleep. Medical science has not yet discovered all that transpires during sleep. It is important that children develop a routine to establish a sleep pattern. Many of the hormones the body produces are timed to be released during sleep mode, particularly hormones that regulate growth and repair muscles.
