Helping Teens Avoid Degrading Sex

Yahoo published an article discussing whether 'degrading' lyrics are linked to teen sex. The researchers are unable to determine which is the cause. The unanswered questions are:
Do kids who listen to raunchy lyrics get involved in sex?
OR
Do kids who are involved in sex like raunchy lyrics?

It seems to me that this research is much like other research I've read. They look at ONLY two factors, when there are probably many factors involved.

What percentage of teens like the taste of alcohol the first time? What percentage of teens like degrading lyrics the first time? The answer to both is probably quite small.

Why do they persist in something they don't like? The answer is likely to be as complex as the reason women stay in abusive relationships. Some possible factors impacting teens are peer pressure, wanting to be accepted, wanting to conform, enjoying the high, fearing judgment from parents.

Conducting research is difficult. Comparing only two alternatives makes researching much more doable. This can serve as a warning to read research reports critically.

The human psyche is extremely complex. It is not like a math problem a+b=c, because there are many possible factors that impact both "a" and "b."

Why does a child from a good home get involved in drugs? The answer is a little bit different every time.

One possible solution to the issue of your children and 'degrading' lyrics is to listen to music with your teens. Then talk openly and non-judgmentally about what it means, how it makes them feel, and what they can do when they find themselves in a difficult situation. Having an escape plan is an excellent defense for anyone (including adults). We do not think clearly in the heat of the battle.
