According to ABC News' interview with Francis Largeman Roth, editor of Health magazine, people are looking for ways to get more food and nutrition for their dollar. She said people are cutting coupons and going online to look for deals.

When I Googled "free coupons," there were nearly 32 million sites. For some reason I thought of Coupon Suzy. That search produced 198,000 sites.

One thing I noticed about some coupon sites is that you must download free software in order to print the coupons. I have not done the download.

Back to the comments from Francis. Playing on the old "Don't leave home without it," there are five items you don't leave the grocery store without. They have a lot of nutritional bang for the buck, in that they have long shelf life and you can freeze them.

1.  Frozen veggies have the same nutritional value as fresh veggies because they are harvested at the peak of the season. Veggies are low in calories, high in fiber and rich in nutrients.

2.  Canned salmon is a better choice than canned tuna because it has Omega 3s. And the bones are an excellent source of calcium. She said the flavor is milder than tuna and you can use salmon in casseroles.

3.  Brown rice is high in fiber and contains lots of B vitamins. Since it takes about 45 minutes to cook, the suggestion was to cook enough for more than one meal, then freeze it. A bag containing 19 1/2 cup servings costs about $2.49.

4.  Edamame beans have the health benefits of soy. Children tend to really like them. You can eat them hot or cold. They make great additions to stir fry, stew or soup.
   
5.  Sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients, including beta carotene. The are rich in fiber, and they will keep 2-3 weeks. You can use them in casseroles, quick breads, baby food.
