In these uncertain days we need a solid foundation, something that will not change and that will give us hope. About 2000 years ago an unnamed Hebrew wrote that faith is the essential nature of what we cannot see and yet believe. He also wrote that people from ancient times who had faith were commended.
We all have some measure of faith. We sit in chairs, believing they will hold us. We confide in people, believing they will not betray us. We use bank accounts, believing our money will be available.
We all like to win, to be commended. We strive to win. But how long does that victory last? Someone else gets a newer gadget or promotion. There is another super bowl next year.
What commendation did those ancients win? That Hebrew writer proceeded to say one obtained spiritual status, another had a testimony and yet another became heir. They were commended for having faith in the Most High. And their faith purchased spiritual rewards that still endure.
Our world is in tumult. We need something that will endure and give meaning to life. That Hebrew writer said those who come to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him. Are you willing to choose to believe the Most High? Entering into relationship with him will change you. Are you desperate enough that you are willing to be changed?
The 1700s were also troubled times. Katharina von Schlegel left us a heritage of faith in the words of this song, Be Still, My Soul.
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
The choice is yours. Faith in God sustains through time and eternity. What do you choose?
