Computer Virus Still Alive

On March 25 I posted the then-current warning about the computer virus that experts expected to activate on April Fools Day. It appears the Conficker-C virus did not do massive damage on April 1, 2009, as some experts anticipated. In a sense, that is a relief. Computers are working today, which keeps businesses operating.

Apparently Conficker is still dormant. Experts estimate the virus is dormant on 2-12 million computers worldwide. It is designed to take control of computers it has infected and make them slaves to commands from an unknown server somewhere in the world.

The authors behind Conficker can use the virus to

spy
attack
destroy files
connect to internet addresses
forward emails
steal identities
log sensitive corporate information
steal credit card numbers and online banking passwords
log every key stroke
The trend is to use computer viruses to make money.

If you are concerned that your computer may be infected, you can purchase software. It may be very expensive.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been trying to find the originators of the virus. Some experts think the authors might gradually change the way the virus performs, as it has had much publicity lately.

Today computer experts are saying, Do not panic. It is not necessary to stay off your computer. This virus is powerful. It could be activated at any time. An assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation advises the public to have strong security on their computers. The major security companies (MacAfee, Symantec, etc.) are monitoring the virus mutations and making constant security adaptations and updates.
