Healthy Coping Suggestions

The other day a friend said, "I wish I had $100 to spend at yard sales." The economic situation is challenging everyone to tighten our belts. However, it seems as though about 5 to 6 percent of the US population are turning to impulsive spending. There are healthier ways to cope.

Some would advocate looking at the budget and being rational. Yet even in tight financial times we need to celebrate and enjoy life. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking.

Focus on being thankful every day. Be thankful for small things. You are breathing. You have family or friends you love. What about sunshine, good sleep, cold water, hot coffee? Choose to voice thankful thoughts often during the day.

Everyone loves a party. Watch a video (from the library) and make popcorn. Dinner parties do not have to be expensive. Invite friends for dinner. Admission ticket is a baby photo and a dish to pass. Your friends will be glad you started the pot luck event, so they can invite you to their place.

Talk with a trusted friend. You know who keeps secrets. Putting emotions into words gets the pressure outside yourself and helps you think more clearly. Journaling is another option.

Go for a walk or join the Y. My neighbor said his whole family can go to the Y for under $30 per month.

A healthy way to vent anger is to throw ice cubes at pavement. Just be careful no one comes close enough to get hurt. You burn energy, so you are likely to think more clearly. And the noise sounds great!

Do projects NOW. Procrastination feels good for a short time. Then guilt, anxiety and shame set in.

Learn something new. Take a free computer class at your local library.

Go through your things and find something you can give away. Giving does amazing things for the emotions and mental health!
